Why Most Startup Brands Will Never Afford Good PR (And What You Can Do About It)

Traditional PR agencies require 1-3 year retainers at $10K+/month just to establish baseline media presence. For CPG startups with $75K total marketing budgets, that math doesn't work.
But here's the bigger problem: even if you could afford it, most agencies are stuck in 2015. They're not integrating ecommerce infrastructure like affiliate marketing. They're not thinking about AI search visibility. They're selling you media coverage that gets screenshotted for Instagram but doesn't drive discoverable revenue.
Meanwhile, your competitors are showing up in ChatGPT searches. They're getting recommended by Perplexity. They're building affiliate partnerships that turn press mentions into trackable sales.
I've spent 25+ years in PR and the last 6+ years integrating affiliate marketing—completely self-taught because I was tired of hearing "what's the ROI?" and not having an answer. I literally cold-called ShareASale, CJ, and Rakuten to learn their platforms.
Here's what I believe: Startup founders don't need to outsource PR—they need to understand it deeply enough to do it strategically themselves.
Most founders think they're Forbes-worthy but won't share financials. They want the big business story but skip the trades. They expect overnight results and don't understand how earned media actually works. They think "my product is better" is enough without third-party substantiation.
The reality? You need trades before business press. You need differentiation with proof, not just claims. You need 6-12 months of momentum, not magic bullets. And you need your coverage structured so AI platforms can actually discover and recommend you.
This isn't about "PR tips." This is about teaching founders the mechanics of earned media so they can compete without agency budgets—and build infrastructure that turns press mentions into measurable outcomes.
